Pollen allergies: how to protect yourself effectively?

Runny nose, violent sneezing, sore throat... The return of the good weather is not just good news, but the arrival of spring also heralds the arrival of pollen so feared by people with allergies. Do you also suffer from pollen allergies? There are ways to protect yourself. In addition to the traditional solutions that have been with us for many years, now new technologies are also coming onto the market to provide relief for this type of allergy. A brief overview of the remedies already known and promising new solutions!

What exactly is an allergy?

An allergy is simply the body’s overreaction to an external agent to which it is hypersensitive. Once exposed to this allergenic agent, the immune system becomes inflamed and triggers the reaction so much feared by people with allergies, which can manifest itself through various physical symptoms.

People with a pollen-allergy mainly suffer from their allergies during spring when flowering plants reproduce and spread their pollen in the air. The problem? This pollen spreads everywhere and does not stop at the outside walls of our homes. Even at home, pollen is responsible for unpleasant symptoms such as sneezing and, in case of severe allergy, acute respiratory problems.

How do you protect yourself from an allergy to pollen?

Faced with the invasion of pollen in the spring, a few protective measures can help reduce allergic symptoms. It is not therefore advisable to take part in intense sporting activity, to dry your laundry outside, to drive with your windows open, or even to mow the lawn in your garden. In addition to these cases of direct exposure to allergens, there may also be certain hidden factors that can influence the allergic reaction. Air pollution, for example, irritates the respiratory tract and makes it easier for pollen to enter, not to mention that pollution makes pollen more fragile, which breaks it down into even finer and more volatile particles. Due to heavy pollution, the risk of exposure is thus all the greater.

Medical treatments and other solutions

There are currently two types of drug treatment to treat pollen allergies: antihistamines, eye drops and nasal sprays, local treatments that “just” treat the symptoms of allergies, and desensitisation, a treatment lasting several years which aims to cure the cause of allergies using controlled and prolonged exposure to allergens.

If, however, you think that “prevention is better than cure”, there are also new solutions on the market that address the root cause of the problem: the presence of pollen in the air. Home purifiers are now available on the market that remove viruses and bacteria from the ambient air as well as filtering particles such as dust and, of course, pollen.

Daikin air purifiers

The new Daikin purifiers are fitted with electrostatic HEPA filters, high-efficiency airborne particulate filters that emit electrostatic forces to capture the maximum amount of airborne particulate matter. These new-generation purifiers capture nearly 99% of the particles between 0.1 μm and 2.5 μm in size before decomposing them by oxidation using Streamer technology. Most of the pollen in the home is thus destroyed to effectively relieve allergic symptoms, not to mention that you can rely on powerful air humidification to protect your mucous membranes from dryness. No need to fear the return of those beautiful spring days!

Daikin is there to help you chose the air purification system most suitable for your home situation.
